I've used the tom's mini filter and loved it. It has that spray bar that disperses the flow and my bettas never had any issues with it. Great little filter when you don't need too much and very quiet.

I haven't used the Finnex PX-360 that OVT recommended but I would pick that over a Zoo Med 501. I really like my Zoo Med but I feel like it's only good for about 5-6 gallons. I wonder if the 511 would be good, I just don't hear much about it. I had a 501 on a ten gallon and though it worked fine, it only had shrimp.

I don't think the Tom's mini will be enough for a 10 gallon. I have it on my 3 gallon shrimp tank and it works great for that but I don't think it would handle much more than that.

We just installed a Tom's Mini canister on our ten gallon betta tank. It is very quiet. But it's too early to tell how well it works. And I had to improvise to make it a better mechanical filter. The only thing I really don't like about it are the flexible hoses it comes with to connect the filter to the inlet and outlet.

We had a Finnex HOB refugium we tried making a filter from. But it doesn't flow enough water to do anything useful. And it makes a lot of gurgling noise when you turn the air up. Maybe with the optional water pump it might work. But it would still take work to get the water to flow through any media instead of just across it.
