am i overstocked?

I have a 46g bowfront tank that is moderately planted and has driftwood. heres what fish i have

1 opaline gourami, about 2-3"
1 gourami which I don't remember name of,about 2"
1 leopard ctenopoma, about 2"
3 Buenos aires tetras, between 1.5 and 2"
1 African brown knife fish, about 4-5"

I would like to get a gold nugget pleco in there but I feel like it might already be overstocked when they're all grown up

Thanks for lookin.

I think it depends on more than the old 1" per gallon rule. For example, if you've got a good bio filter and plenty of healthy growing plants it will probably be fine because the plants will help to clean the water of fish waste. If instead you had a filter with only mechanical filtration and no plants to take up waste then you might want to be careful with how many fish you have.

If you were following the 1" per gallon rule I think you'd be fine though.

The inch per gallon rule is pretty much crap... You don't put a 1 inch fish in a 1 gallon tank.

OP, Yes, adding a gold nugget would over stock your aquarium, by 31% according to aqadvisor.

If I where you, I would up the number of tetras instead to 5+, and look into a smaller sp of pleco.

Keep an eye on those gouramis, as they could start fighting with each other.

I think the 1" per gallon rule can be a start, but really you need to look at the surface area and amount of oxygen exchange going on. The more oxygen = the more fish you can have. Again, you can't put a 10" Oscar in a 10 gallon tank, so the 1" per gallon rule is mostly to prevent putting too many small (under 3") fish and overstocking. How much maintenance you do and how often also is a factor. If you keep up on your maintenance and don't overfeed, you should be fine for a while. I think adding a pleco would be a mistake in my opinion. If you must add one that doesn't get so big or invest in a different type of algae eater.

For my filtration I have a marineland penguin that has 2 filter cartridges and 2 bio wheels, its rated for up to 90g. I do have plants to help with the filtration. For my maintenence I do weekly or bi weekly water changes. I will keep an eye on the gouramis, but I haven't noticed it yet

Doesn't the african brown knife get to be 12 inches you might want to get another home for him, or of course get a bigger tank.
