Photometers/Colorimeters

The nice thing about a birthday in February is that you can combine the extra cash from your returned Christmas gifts with your anticipated birthday gifts to try to convince your wife that you need high end test kits.

I know I don't need them, but I'm a testing geek and I want them. I'm starting to do my own research but wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions for the best way to test for, at least, Nitrate and Phosphate using photometers/colorimeters on a budget of around $400 to $500, including reagents, etc.

I am considering the Hanna N and P photometers - seems like they would do the job, but then I can't use them for additional parameters in the future.

Seems like I could also go the generic route with a colorimeter, and then use it for any parameters I want in the future, but that is looking like it would break the budget.

Anyone been down this road?

Hanna Photometers

I went with the LaMotte Smart2 Calorimeter. It's a phenomenal piece of equipment.

Ha! Read that thread just before posting. That's what stopped me from just impulse buying the Hanna Meters. Wasn't sure from that thread if the Smart2 worked out for you. Sounds like it did. But it seems the Smart2 is discontinued and the Smart3, new, breaks that bank. Will have to poke around for used.

So, you found the Smart2 to be accurate and reliable for Nitrate and Phosphate?

I did. The Smart2 is rock solid. Check out the first post here:

Didn't know there was a newer model. Just looked it up. It's pretty nice looking - can't remember how much the Smart2 was, but I don't remember paying as much as I'm seeing the Smart3 for!
