Your advice please...

Hi all - don't know if this would be the best place for this post - please let me know if not or I'll keep posting!

I have set up a terrarium in a 30gal tank. It has a water area that is partitioned off from the land area. the depth of the water is 13cm. This does not include a subtrate of flourite at 2". The water is moving through a 1step internal filter in the back that sends the out to a tube to on top of a waterfall on the far corner of the tank. The tank is hooded with a metal hood that has a ceramic heater and a 18" plant UV light.

Ok, all that stuff aside - I want to have plants in the water growing on the bottom. I understand thought that I might have problems with CO2 without fish or something like that. I'd love to hear anyones thoughts on this set up - which fish/animals/plants? Is this setup doomed for some reason? Please let me know.

I already purchased 2 plants - "Glossostigma elatinoides" and "micranthemum umbrosum" (wow that is a lot to type!) cause I liked how they looked, but right now they are just sitting in their little plastic pots on the bottom.

Assuming you have plenty of humidity within the viv, I don't think you should have any problems with Anubias spp, Java fern, and maybe some Cryptocoryne spp. These will all happily break the surface and grow above the water line as marginals.

Do you have an experience with planted tanks in general? But as skylsdale stated having a plant growing out of the 5 inches of water you have would be best, then they can use the CO2 in the ambient air.

Glosso should grow up wards instead of sideways if sufficient light isn't availible and whenever there is high light there is always a need of CO2.But say if you grow the glosso emersed,it might work but I have no experience with emersed growth.Hope this helps!!!

Pennywort. This plant grows well in all lights, and it breaks the surface of the water too. If you only want it to grow underwater, just pinch off the tops.

Also, bacopa monnieri will do well in your setup. Both don't need CO2.
