Tissue Culture question

I'm going to try my hand at tissue culture and the ph part has me confused. Does the ph even really matter? or as long as it's around 6-7?
I don't really want to buy a really expensive ph meter to get adjust it to 5.7.
I have an api ph test kit any idea how to use that for this? Will ph paper work?
Any advice?

Also, instead of autoclaving or microwaving do you think immersing the container into boiling water for like 7 minutes would work?
Any help would be appreciated! thanks!
