Surface skimmer for a shallow tank

I need a surface skimmer for a paludarium with only about 3.5" of water. I am thinking of buying a Hagen Fluval unit and cutting it to size. I was wondering if anyone has already tried this.

Drill the tank and add a short standpipe with a sump under it....
