CPO Diets and will they eat my MTS?

What exactly do CPOs eat? Everyone usually just says they'll eat anything, but that doesn't really help me, I was wondering, is there anything that's recommended that is important for their diet? Like can I clip kale or anything else to a veggie clip to feed them? I have read that they eat snails. Will they eat my MTS or the baby ones at least? Do they eat the same micro-organisms that shrimp eat? Will they eat detritus worms or copepods?

Thanks for any answers you can provide!

Hey there! I believe I can help you a little.

Yes they love snails, but many snails they can't get out of their shells. I've noticed they like ramshorns and bladder snails more than any other type.

I've never seen them eat an MTS, and they typically only eat bigger snails.

They are omnivores! They like algae wafers, shrimp pellets, spinach, dead shrimp, live shrimp, shrimp and crayfish shells lol.

Oh on micro organisms, no. They're slow critters. They can't catch Copepods, or I'm sure they would.

They eat whatever they can get their little claws on. This is usually limited to slow things, cuz CPOs are pretty slow themselves. They will eat MTS, but they don't like em much so they will go for easier food sources first. They even eat poo. They seem to like meaty things the most, so I like to spot feed mine shrimp pellets in addition to flake food.

I have had horrible luck finding things mine will eat so I think we need to keep in mind that 'your mileage may vary' or rather 'your CPOs taste may vary'. I have tried a variety of algae pellets, shrimp pellets, specialty shrimp foods (CRS Specialty is said to be good for them), fresh veggies and more and the only thing mine will eat is the occasional bit of kale and Crab Cuisine. I have bought two types of shrimp pellets for them which none will eat (I have 4, had 5 until a few weeks ago). Mine are picky picky picky. They DO keep the baby ramshorn population in check though. They don't mess with the adults as much but the babies are fair game. I have many shrimp in with mine, have seen them go after them but haven't witnessed a catch yet.

Oh, mine DO however like frozen spirulina brine shrimp and beefheart. I've tried carrots, bell peppers, kale, and spinach and only do they occasionally nibble the kale and bell peppers before they drop it and wander off.

This is true, but I've been thinking about your problem.. I know CPOs can go months without eating, so perhaps yours are simply full?

Doubt it since they run and grab any crab cuisine pellets but with the other stuff they grab it, taste it, spit it out and drop it.

Wow that's really weird! Maybe they were raised on something and they just decided they won't eat anything else :/

Mine love shirakura Soft Taste, cichlid pellets, Fluval Shrimp granules.

They haven't ever eaten fresh veggies for me, only meaty or smelly foods

Mine eat everyday. They fight my ADF down to the last bloodworm but I usually feed them hakari sinking wafers. Also just found out while reading this thread, snails. All the empty shells make sense now.

Agree with this. I haven't tested the cichlid pellets.

i have a pair of virile crays. theyre like freshwater pigs.. consume and digest everything they can. one of them learned to crawl to the top to eat upside-down at the surface. pretty neat.. if they werent so rough on plants i would suggest them to everyone.
