Which filter where?
I picked up a too good to pass up fluval 405 today and have a decision to make. Should I put the 405 on my 75g african tank and move my ac110 or my penguin 400 to my 46g angel tank or just put the 405 on the angel tank? Definitely needs one or the other due to angel tank currently being underfiltered.

So it didnt go so well...the 405 has way to much flow for the 46g it literally is blowing all my plants over and the angels are swimming for their lives

You can always install a larger out flow nozzle. That will make the current less forcefull or you can use the silver lever to devrease the output. I have a 405 on a 29 and have n problems after the modifications.

I have used a canister like that on several tanks of about that size (45 gallons, some 3' long, some 4' long). Sure helps to use a spray bar. Makes a great river tank.
I am running the AC 110 HOB on 2 tanks. 72 gallon bowfront and 45 gallon. It is a lot of flow for the 45 gallon, but that is a bit of a river set up, so it works OK. On the 72 gallon it is not a lot of flow, and is actually one of 2 filters. I would work with the canister on the smaller tank. More options fro altering the inlet and outlet to moderate the flow to suit the fish. The HOB filters pretty much have one outlet, the weir, and that is it. |

Yes thanks Diana. I turned the flow down about 1/4 of the way 75% and it is working like a champ

You can slow the flow on the 405 with the aquastop valve.

I always thought African cichlids need extra filtration because they are heavy waste producers and do best in overstocked tanks due to being territorial. So I would put the 405 on the Cichlid tank along with the HOB with less GPH. (I'm assuming the Penguin 400)
Then do the HOB with more GPH on the Angel tank. (assuming the AC 110 with the flow turned down)

I concur with this setup. Put the 405 and 400 on your African cichlid tank. The AC110 goes on your angel tank.
