Default Tom Barr's Low Tech (already have fish)

Hi guys. I have a 10 currently setup with CPDs and MTS (the substrate). The MTS is driving me crazy with brown fluff and it's just too messy for me. I'd like to try Tom Barr's Low Tech No CO2 method. I'll be following this - http://www.sudeepmandal.com/hobbies/...ed-tank-guide/. The problem is, it says to allow the tank to cycle for some time. I already have a mature filter and fish so could I bypass that cycling step? Don't want to kill off my expensive CPDs... Also, recommendations on a good substrate to use? No ADA as it's out of budget. Thinking about onyx sand... How would I go about making the switch?
