That's interesting. I never saw pricing before. The article states around $43,000 U.S. for a 8 foot setup and $600 monthly maintenance. That doesn't really sound that pricey from a retail perspective, but then again these are usually free-standing setups.

Actually the article continues if your in the U.S. you would have to go for a much bigger setup for it to work logistically for ADA.

He means he cannot replicate the look of coral reefs in his setup, which should be expected. He cannot do what he wants to achieve, which is replicate the beauty of coral reefs in his setups.

hmm. i never set up my own salt water reef thank before, but what is it that is hard to replicate?

I think it's probably scale. A reef's beauty in nature is based on it's size and diversity which would be very hard to do without going to a tremendous size setup. Not that it can't look beautiful, but it would still not be as stunning as nature.

The tanks done by Amano are fantastic looking tanks, but they are also highly contrived. In other words the tank is set up to form his ideal view of nature.

A SW system with live corals is going to grow more or less the way it wants to. Sure you can do the initial setup, and some pruning, but you can't control it the way you can in a FW planted tank.

I've never done a reef tank but it seems to me that saltwater tanks attempt to replicate nature on a small scale (or at least the look of natural).

Freshwater mostly does as well, but Amano tanks don't- creating a mountain seen in an aquarium might be re-interpreting nature but it isn't trying to replicate it, if you all know what I'm trying to say.
-which makes me wonder if there is a movemnt in the saltwater arena that doesn't try to replicate nature but make the tank into something like amano has done with freshwater.

Noticing that Amano sama used to ride bicycles competetively, I'm wondering whether the Amano shifters and other bike parts might be named for the same gentlemen . . .

That's Shimano that makes shifters, brakes, etc. I don't believe they're affiliated with Amano. Although I agree with it being interesting the he rode competitively before he started ADA

I still like reef tanks though, and think they are beautiful.
I wonder if that means ADA won't develop any more saltwater products?

currently they only have:

Tanks with overflows
sump
20k HQI bulbs for MH

and 2 of those can be used with freshwater.
I don't think I have seen someone with a Solar I use it on a reef with the 20k ADA bulb, curious about color.
