Yeah, I would check that your not putting to much co2 in the tank and "gasing" the fish.

The tetras are okay, along with the other shrimp, so I don't think it's the CO2. The gourami is a labyrinthine fish and it's an open top tank too.

It's hard to tell with these test kits: it looked like zero but I couldn't rule out 0.25.

Last night one person thought it was zero, another 0.25, and a third 0.50.

Meanwhile, the little guy's holed up in a cave in the driftwood. There's no chance of getting him out alive without significant stress/trauma.

How long after death does ammonia begin to appear at detectable levels?

He didn't make it. When it was clear he wouldn't make it, I euthanized him.

His replacement isn't doing well either. I suspect it's the lalia virus in both cases, although it's very early for the new one to exhibit symptoms.
