What earphones do you use?

Agreed. Here's the review of |joker| from the head-fi.org forums. IIRC the S5/S5i uses the same dynamic drivers as the S4/S4i.

After some solitary time with the S4, I think that they are interesting earphones that deliver heavy bass impact, clean mids, and decent treble. The bass can be too powerful and boomy for my liking, but that’s more of a personal issue - at least they don’t give me bass headaches. It’s not quite as tight as I would like, but can’t really be called bloated either. I can see why this bass has mass appeal – it can easily satisfy the bass junkie without offending the audiophile. There is a very small amount bleed into the midrange, which is smooth and articulate, if a little off-neutral (leaning towards warmth) and slightly thin. The treble that the S4s put out is the weak point for me – it lacks the sparkle and smoothness of the RE0 and (even after 200 hours) still sounds somewhat harsh and sibilant. Soundstaging is decent enough but can hardly be called spacious and individual instruments can sometimes be harder to pick out than I would like.

At its $116.95 price on Amazon, I'm willing to bet there are other better options.

The new apple earpods that come with the iPhone 5 are not as bad as the ones all the previous iterations. When I (finally, LOL!) broke my Klipsch S5i, I couldn't find my VSonic GR07 at first, so I actually spent a good 2 weeks with these apple ear things.
- There is zero noise isolation, so it's good when you need to be aware of your surroundings, but bad if you want to hear your music in a noisy environment.
- It tends to fall of my ears easily. On the upside, no cable noise (IEM owners know this LOL!)
- They did bump up the mid-bass quite a bit here, so hip-hop and pop lovers would be very happy. Unfortunately, it's just mid-bass, so there's no lower sub-bass rumble.

Now that I found my VSonic GR07, the apple earphones definitely are lacking in the mids and instrument separation/clarity. The highs seem to be okay in the apple earphones, but it's hard to judge that right now as the VSonic GR07 is very good in high's, but sometimes can be borderline sibilant.

At the end of the day, "sound quality" will always be subjective. I do not consider myself an audiophile, at all. I'm just someone who has read a little more about and listened to a few more IEM's and headphones than the "average joe".

I agree with that but to say that Apple Ear buds are the best bang for the buck...that's either because they are essentially free with a new Apple product, or because the person either has never in their life listened to music through a decent pair of headphones or they really don't care about music quality. IMO, the GR07 or GR07 bass represent one of the best for the money right now. I have the GR07 Bass and they are really good earphones for the cost. I think I paid less than $30 shipped for the pair. To purchase the Apple Ear Pods, they cost the same amount. Of course for serious listening, I'm reaching for my Etymotics.

I've used some Bose QuietComfort 2's for some four years now and have yet to use anything better. Best quality I've listened on. Noise cancellation is on point, too.

For in-ear I use the stock Apple ones.

Osaka Denki Onkyo had it right when he said it takes power to create clarity. and ima rant real quick, everyone can take their digital crap back to the store, analog amps still hit harder, have meatier mids, and crisper highs than most new digital amps today.

+1 for Bose. Most well known speaker makers makes good headsets.so does klipsch, synheiser, JBL to name few.
