Derimming - 29g - 36x12x16 - 3/8" thick?

DIY experts, I have a question!

Do you think it is safe to remove the top rim only of a 30g tank that's 36" long built from 3/8 inch glass.

The DIY aquarium calculator here http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium says that 1/4 inch would be fine with a safety factor of "3.8" - but I'm not sure how this translates to rimless.

In this case would it be best to add a glass brace?

It is an older tank - holds water just fine, but if derimming (if possible) should I reseal?

brace would deffinately be needed, btw thats not a 29

Definitely add the brace. I removed the rim from a 10gal and didn't add a brace, but that's a much smaller tank. The longer the face of the tank is, the less outward pressure it can handle.

I have removed all the rimming on my old 29L. I resealed after, its also on a foam pad. The glass is 3/8 I believe and it bows an 1/8 inch on each side unbraced. It has been up and running for a number of years and had zero probs. I also fill it up to around half inch from the top. I'll post a couple pics tonight.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll go with some glass corner braces just to feel safe - but this rim's got to go.
