Haha def the greatest thread on here, laughing my butt off too AVN. I thought fish poop was somewhat benefitial, but I didn't think bringing the Browns to the Superbowl might help a fish tank. Stick to the trail mix diet its healthy enough haha

Since the last update I ROAKed the Echinodorus 'Paul Kloecker', the C. Cilatia and the C. Affinis. I planted Red Melon Swords. The one on the left could be split but, I'm just going to let it go. The Dwaf Sag is doing well.

Awesome thread!
I have to say, I'd still wear gloves when putting my hand in that tank..

Thanks While not as ascetically pleasing as my 40g. I enjoy this one just as much.

While not something I would consider trying (not to mention I don't have an animal I can scavenge poop from) I commend your efforts at breakthrough substrates. This is quite obviously a success if planned and assembled correctly.

Really the "DOG" part of DogFish is my stronger side as far as hobbies go. I'm not a bad gardener either. I've used compost for over 25 years so that helped too. I truly don't mind the skeptics if it helps a few people it's worth it.

In an effort to try to induce the Rams to breed, I did a major tear down. I forgot to do a before & after pic. The Melon Swords, developed a nice root system, this is only some of the roots as I broke some of them removing the plants. Also notice no blacken roots from anaerobic bacteria. While they grew a lot of leaves, the leaves stayed small. I'm think too much light(?) The D. Sag took over the tank. ![]() Ater removing the cap, I had expected to find some plant fiber remnants of the initial planting. Nothing was found, not even an Oak leaf stem. Also no bacterial stench, actually a nice earthy forest floor type smell. ![]() Next I added a layer of peat: ![]() Then a layer of crushed Oak leafs: ![]() I hope this may lower the soil PH a little. I mixed that all together, (thought a pic was unneeded) Then I added a 1" Play sand cap and replanted a little of the Dwarf sag that had taken over and a lot of 'Mystery' crypts that I got from Zenche.

IME peat does a great job of lowering the ph. Mine goes down almost a point with sphagnum moss as my substrate.
