I agree about Alabama. It's hard to find good plants, but sometimes if I get to the pet store in time I get some first. I never see anyone wanting to sell cuttings or shrimp locally. I started a planted tank this year and am starting to see good things. Soon I hope I'll be able to swap trimmings. Got plenty of duckweed.

Yeah def hard to find anything good locally. I bought some plants off members here which filled my tank mostly. So just keep checking here and I know theirs a facebook page for people from AL. Look up- All Things Aquatic in Alabama ... people buy/sell/trade on their too.

I was surfing the web for carnivorous plants and come across a site bamaplants.com The site has a list of aquatic plants they sell. They are located in Andalusia. I've never done business with them so I can't speak on their plants. May be worth driving to see what they have to offer if your close to them.

Thanks for the post, I'm checking out the website now looks like they have some good stuff on there. I live to far away for a drive over there, but wouldn't mind ordering seeing how prices are reasonable.

I have ordered from them and everything went great. They even offer Assassin snails and olive nerites, and they have plans to have some shrimp soon.

That is cool that you have ordered from there before. I was really looking into ingredients for MTS substrate. Working all the time I haven't had the chance to really look into it. I saw the site had prepackaged items, but probably cheaper for me to find the time to look around the city. Hopefully they get some good shrimp so I can get some nice ones in the tank.

I recently got back into aquariums and I live in the Shelby county area. I have a 40gal tank with tetras, a few ghost shrimp, and some anachris. I was wanting to get some more plants that help clean the water and are easy to maintain. I was thinking of some Java moss but can't find any locally. Anyone have any info, do people still check this post, it looks a little old?
I would also be interested in talking with locals about any good stores and sharing info/ideas. Thanks, Dolfan |

I'm also in Shelby county (Calera). I've ordered java moss from Pet Supplies Plus in Pelham. You have to ask a manager, but they can order a large variety of plants and fish they normally don't carry. Or you can always go to the swap and shop section of this forum (I think is the best choice).
Other stores are of course petsmart and petco. However their selection is very thin at best. Aquarium imports in Hoover is mostly saltwater, but he does have some freshwater fish and sometimes the hard to find ones. His plants are mostly covered with BBA algea. Pet supermarkets in Vestavia Hills used to have a good selection of plants and fish (even bought amano shrimp and olive nerite snails there), but the last time I went it wasn't looking good. |
