Is 3 liters of substrate enough for a 12x12 tank bottom?

I have an eheim aquastyle 9, would a three liter bag of amazonia and a small bag of power sand be enough to get the approximately 12x12 bottom of this tank covered sufficiently? I plan on using some rocks but lets say if I chose not to: would those two products help to cover the bottom of the tank? Can anyone help me get a good idea how big an actual bag of 3 liter amazonia is? lol I just need to know if I should opt in for the 9 liter bag or not.

I'm so glad you asked this question! I've been trying to figure out if a 3 liter bag of Amazonia will be enough for a 3 gallon JBJ Picotope. It's 11 x 8 so this answers my question too.

The ADA substrate bags are measured in liters, which is volume. One liter is 61 cubic inches. With 3 inches of substrate on a 12x12 tank, you'd have 432 cubic inches, and 3L of substrate is 183 cubic inches. So you'd need three 3L bags of Amazonia (or one 9L bag) with no rocks or other substrate to get 3 inches of substrate.

This is good information. Substrate depth needs to be considered. There wasn't any listed in the original post.

Okay cool. so it looks like I'm going to get the 9 liter bag - thank you very much. Still wondering about powersand but I've heard I probably won't really need it anyway.
