Know what's a dumb thing to do?

Decide at 9:30 at night to do a substrate change. By hand. With no planning. With new stems.

I have black flourite capped with light gravel. I like it fine, but its the same as my other tank, and I've been wishing I had left it black.

So feeling a little bored tonight, I decide to try scooping out the gravel manually, with plans to cap it with more black flourite (which I don't have on hand).

So over an hour later, I'm not even half done the tank, and it looks awful. I'm never going to get all the gravel, and whatever I miss will forever make its way to the top. My stems are uprooting, I've made a huge mess.

So I said screw it, replanted everything and put the gravel back in. Now its a little mixed with the flourite, but I think that's okay, it looks a little more natural. I still don't hate it, I think I just need to plant it more heavily and let things get settled and grow in. And if I ever feel like I have to change it, I'll take everything out properly and just start over. No monkeying around!

Boredom is dangerous!

Step 1) Pour scotch or bourbon.
Step 2) Consume.
Step 3) Evict aquarium tenants and force them into project housing (buckets).
Step 4) Pull plants.
Step 5) Drain aquarium completely.
Step 6) Make Steak-Um sandwich.
Step 7) Take nap.
Step 8) Remove substrate.
Step 9) Repeat steps 1, 2 and 7.
Step 10) Replace substrate, fill aquarium, float plants, move fish back into luxury housing and call it a night.
Step 11) Wake up realizing you did not wash your hands, having eaten said sandwich, now unable to sleep with nightmares of amoebas making Swiss cheese of your brain, decide to properly replant tank.
Step 12) Relish in the 2am feeling of accomplishment.
Step 13) Wake up at noon, realizing you passed out in the basement fish room on the floor, where all of the wolf spiders are in your home.
Step 14) Get paranoid and itchy about spiders.
Step 15) Realize that you are late for work and panic.
Step 16) Arrive at work, only to note that it is Sunday and your day off.

...c'mon, I know someone else can relate to that! :?

Sounds like basically all of my tank projects although it's some truly unhealthy time early Sunday morning for me.

I think the mixed gravel does look more natural, too. And some flourite is better than none.

LOL

No worries friend as long as you are not a forceful nose picker. They usually invade through the nasopharynx and are much more common if the water is >85 degrees F. Naeglaria Fowleri. Bad Mother F'ers. > 99% fatality.

No aquarium related cases.
