I have a XP 2 on my 45 G tank with all kinds of flow, to much to be honest, sounds like you have a issue with your XP 3. maybe try to run your XP with out the inline heater and see what happens. good luck

If this helps - Bottom and middle tray I have rocks and the top tray and I have four square sponges. I'm not sure if that could be the issue or not but tonight I'll try to run it without any of the baskets in the canister.

I think the Xp flows bottom up so you might have your media in the wrong order than suggested. Probably not the issue, just a thought.

Well, it's working...sort of. There was a prime(?) hole that was open on the motor. I had a plug laying around that I didn't know where it was suppose to go. The plug is in bad shape, for now I just taped it, plugged the hole and the system started working!
Does anyone know if the hole on the motor about dime size suppose to be plug? It's not on the bottom it's actually on the side. I thought it didn't matter but I think that may be the reason why the intake and outflow is pretty weak. I put the four layer sponge at the top, seeing a few Rena videos it says to put it at the bottom. It's a little too late to mess around with it but will try again tomorrow. |

All of my Rena XPs (I have an XP1, XP2, and XP3) have the black plug in one of the side holes on the motor. They all had the plug in one of the holes when I purchased them. Never thought that would stop the flow but I see where it could.
The XPs do flow bottom to top so you do want to put your course sponges low and the finer ones higher. I really don't think it matters where you put other media. I've tried different set-ups and never noticed any differences in performance.

![]() This is how the trays are setup - Bottom tray went into the bottom, top left tray went into the middle and top right tray went on the top. There is no leak in the holes, so everything should be air tight. I would think the top tray with the sponges will restrict suction flow, other than that it could also be the rotor impeller or orings need to be replaced. I'll get some videos up tonight of how weak the spray bar is. |

Mine didn't do well with the spray bar but works fine with the jet spray.
What plug are you talking about? I swear I've had my xp3 for 5 years now and never noticed a plug. |

IMO .....Your trays are pack solid there, also those sponges would be a big issue with flow, think I would just stay with just Rena's Bio stars or ceramic rings.
like the other poster stated you must have The Rens's course filters on the very bottom tray & not the top tray.... on my Xp 2 I have the 2 course Rena filters on the bottom tray with 12 Rena Bio stars on top of the course filters, then on my top tray I have a small bag of JBL ceramic rings and then the Polishing filter on top. I get great flow. I also clean the Rena about every 3 weeks as I can not go any longer than that.....it gets pretty dirty. Good luck |

I had the same problem with one of my XP3s a couple of weeks ago. The flow could be low or high or none at all. I found that one of the nylon balls in the shut off valve was not rotating with the leaver. Ended up purchasing a new valve assembly which I did not use. If you need one contact me by PM.

If you take a look at the picture below you can see the intake hole on the left then the output hole on the right. I was referring to the black plug on the output. ![]() Quote:
Maybe I'm just expecting too much from this xp3. I still don't see how this could filter larger tanks when there's barely any circulation/filteration in my 40g. |

Here is a long shot: take the impeller out and check the metal jacket for a vertical hairline crack.

Honestly I think you have things packed too tight. You need water movement through the filter baskets. It's like trying to push water through a plastic bag with pin sized holes. It isn't going to work well. You need to allow some space in between the media and the baskets. If that doesn't work I would call Rena. I've never had a problem with my XP3 and like Rob in I have to clean mine every 3 weeks and the water I dump out is brown as dirt!
