Leg mounting slides

Hey everyone. I'm trying to figure out a way to hang my Ray II light without having to drill into the casing. I came up with an idea, but forgot to bring one of my mounting legs with me to work today. Would anyone happen to know the diameter of the round rail on the leg that slides into the light fixture?

If it's the same as the fugeray, it's 3/32"

Thanks. I forgot to grab it today too. Looks like I have a lunch trip to the Depot today.

Yes, you can slide nails or wire into the slide grooves

The 'official' hanger should be 2 'C' shaped hangers that wrap around the light from the top and slide in the same groves.

EDIT: just now thought of this, but long stiff wire (stainless?) through the slide grooves would allow a Finnex light to go on a slightly longer tank than the light, a la Mainland's fixtures.

I have a design in mind that will slide into the existing grooves. I think it'll work quite well. Home Depot doesn't carry 3/32 rod though so I had to order online. It'll be a week or so before I can try my idea.

Well, photobucket is not liking me right now. I'll just have to show you the final brackets. I'll try again tomorrow to get it to let me show you the process. They're fairly simple

With these brackets in place of the legs you can use whatever method (chain, cable, whatever) you want to hang your lights. No drilling into the case or modifying the light at all.

I used aluminum for these and they support a 24" light very easily. Stainless rods are also available and, while most likely more difficult to bend, would be more rigid and I would assume could hold more weight. I really don't think it would matter in this application anyhow.

Nice work! Maybe you can start marketing them as I'm sure there are a ton of users here looking for hanging options. That's pretty close to the design we sent over to be produced but we still haven't received any feedback back yet. If anyone asks for a kit, I can surely direct them to you if you like!

That sounds awesome to me. I had enough material on hand to make 5 sets. Made one for myself and have four SCAPE members getting sets later this week. I've already ordered more material. Send them my way for sure!

Probably going to do this soon. Nothing but friction preventing the hanger from sliding out of the grooves? (if the light were jostled/tipped, for example)?

Wonder if there's a hobby shop near me that sells 3/32" SS rods.

I found some SS 3/32" rods tonight at a local Ace, but I can't get permission from my wife to hang the lights.... hm.

How high do you want them off the tank? If it isn't too high you can make legs/feet with SS instead of hangers
