I was thinking the same thing. Why defoliate right before winter?

Leaves were already changing and starting to fall off -- I've also read that it is good to defoliate the tree at this time to prevent dead leaves from falling and causing rot on the surface of the soil.

i personally wouldve just let them fall naturally, seeing as how you've defoliated it quite alot as of late. but it should be fine.

so I ended up winning it, had to stay on ebay until the end and got the winning bid at 45seconds remaining... for $31 I'd say it seems like a good deal to me, this is the one:
I look forward to getting it and learning a bit about proper bonsai care

Love this time of year!
![]() ![]() As you can see I have some nice moss around the bottom. I'm thinking that will cover the glossy for the winter and we'll see how it looks. Here is a close up of the moss. It grows around my house.

They are falling fast, but yeah I still have leaves. Tom's maple lost it's leaves a month ago (were both in Sacramento) and my was still spitting out new ones.....go figure. Temps are low 40's to mid 70's. Some rain some sun.
I think I might wire it this winter.

My leaves are gone on the maple. The Dawn redwood is getting close to being all gone also. Repotting time.
Also, now is a good time to grow moss(well, here) for the ground cover. Grind in a blender or chop up fine and add water, some light ferts, and then slather it on the soil and around the base of the tree. Mist often(daily) and hopefully 30-50F temp ranges. My Chinese elm tends to lose some leaves, but not all here, the cork bark elm loses most of them. The rest are evergreen. Antbug, you might wire those branches and then the ones you do not want. Winter maple branches are brittle, be careful.
