I use a combination of three things: Large, frequent water changes to maintain phosphate, sulfate and nitrate levels in the tank water. I rotate three to four different liquids every few months. Living things will be healthier with a combination of different foods and liquids are very easy to dose. And, after several years in the "water keeping" hobby, I've found that long term, there's no better fert than that provided by the fish. I just feed a balanced diet of mostly frozen foods. The plants have never complained! B

What lighting on what size tank do you have? The need for fertilizers is driven by how much light you have. With low light, the fish can provide all the plants need, but with high light, they can't possibly do so.
