Today I went to the local garden center to see if anything was on sale, considering that fall and winter are on their way/already happening...
I went with the intention of purchasing a Japanese red maple. They had at least twenty, ranging from 1.5'-6'. Two of them had some very nice nebari and thick trunks, but branching started some 2' up from them. It'd be a hassle and would take a long time to do a trunk chop, and even then it wouldn't have been worth dropping ~$85 on them. I ended up finding a nice Sargent juniper with potential for becoming a raft-style bonsai for just $9. I already trimmed it up, and tomorrow I will wire it and post pics. It was really funny too that at the nursery, I ran into a family friend who asked me to make her a Wabi Kusa for her (she'd seen my site through a friend's friend on Facebook or something), so my trip there turned out to be about twice as profitable as the purchase of the tree itself

Pics tomorrow. This is true, to be honest this didn't occur to me. I've never killed a tree and doubt that I will in the near future (if ever...). Proper care after pruning should be fine. Weather has been moderate in the 50's-70's lately, but will drop over the next few months obviously.

This is a great thread will have to look at it closer when I have a couple extra min. I will post some pics of previous trees that I tried my hand at unfortunitly they were either stolen or died from lack of light at the apt we had a few years ago.
I would love to try my hand at this again, Any advice for a newbie, I should have room on the stand my 20 long and a few of my orchids will be on. I have a twin bulb 65 watt pc fixture I am going to be suspending over the stand for light. Curt PS My algeries an me dont get along with juniper....

ohh i see! lol!this one looks nasty, its a ficus (ginseng ficus maybe) but its got these like huge swollen elephant obese roots and then leaves. UGLY here it is a few years ago when i first got it. ive gotten the leaves to have better ramification and so they are closer to the trunk and nice and dense. but still UGLY

Update on the trees, I've moved them to their winter location where they will receive less light fewer hours of the day and more shade. They are on a little bench I made on my front balcony. I will get some better photos of the actual location tomorrow. Also, the glosso on the Trident Maple is doing amazingly! I never expected that it would do so well. It hasn't gotten really cold yet, but then again, it never really gets really cold here (much to my dismay).
