My first Bog Garden

I decided to get rid of grass in the front yard, (back yard is landscaped, pool and 800G Koi pond with no room for anything else.

So started the dig today and will have a 16' x 9' bog. I want to have it hands off so it will self water and keep moist without me needing to to anything.

Here is an out line of the design I am planning.

1. 12" depth
2. pond liner with holes poked every 3' on the bottom
3. 1" layer of sand
4. fill up with earth and sphagnum moss mixture
5. wood based mulch on top to stop weeds
6. rock edged to hide the liner overlap
7. Rain barrel at the back next to the house
8. rain barrel plumbed to pvc that enters the front edge of the bog with holes drilled in the pvc that is buried in the bottom of the bog
9. Gardena water computer will control the draining of the rain barrel
10. a moisture sensor will turn on and off the water computer to keep the bog moist all the time.
11. the bog should get 6 hours of direct sun light.

I will be updating as I go.

Planned plants are all pond marginal plants, many all bloom throughout the summer.

I dug a little too deep!

Now I know the bog will be about 16"

I plan to have a berm at the back with ground cover like creepy jenny, and hens and chicks covering it and help hide the rain barrels (two daisy chained).

I also found out that my works new building, will have commercial landscaper work with me to design a natural bog in the front of the building with local marginal plants. We are also going to do indoor plant design with eco friendly water supply and low maintenance. I get input on the design and I'm hoping to learn how to build my home bog from an expert.

Here are some pics of what I'm done so far, I plan to try to get most of the digging done before winter.

I will start a new thread for the commercial project at my work, once it gets started.

How deep does the ground freeze? Even 16" might be too shallow.

About 4" of freezing my ponds have had this much or less of ice since I have a have a hole open I can measure the ice thickness. I won't have any plants in the bog this winter but my pond does have hardy marginals that will over winter on pond shelf that is 10-12" deep. I thinking the bog should allow me to over winter if plants are planted 12" down

Looking for advice on whether or not to put holes In the bottom and sides

Or just the sides 12" down from the soils surface

I was thinking lowest point only at the bottom so water eventually drains out

And sides

Any input from some that has done this before. I have read advisor e to put lots of holes in the bottom

Where will the water level be? Flush with the substrate or will there be standing water? This is a very different take on a pond, I'm very curious to see how it turns out.

this is all a bit of an experiment (expensive $ and labour me) but my reading lead me to believe 12" below the soil level I have holes in the liner leaving the full depth of about 24" to hold water in the liner peat, soil and sand mixture.

I have not finished adding peat and soil to cap off the total levelling. The holes in the liner are already done.

My goal is to overwinter the marginals in the bog over winter, next year experiment on how everything survived.

plant list not done yet but will likely all come from local pond store. ( I also have an 800G Koi pond in the backyard)

the edging will come from normal garden plants that surround the bog plants in the middle.

Still have many hours to finish this but I can't by marginals until mid may anyway around here.

stay tuned. neighbours wonder what the hell I am doing.

Rain barrel done works well filled it and let it drain into the bog.

It will take a lot of water to fill the bog but I found my upside down recycle bins with holes for hose actually appear to be water tight when put the hose into them so I drilled holes in it to hopefully get water to the bottom.

Next is hook up water computer to the outside faucet since the rain barrel does not have enough pressure to flow through the water computer when it's open (not a planned but will run backyard faucet to the bog and control water flow merged into the line from the rain barrel to the bog.

Other option is pressurize the output from the barrel not sure what I will do here.

The rain barrel will allow me to easily capture wage and slowly dump into the bog which is dirty, peat moss and sand now with holes 12" down from soil level
