Hi everyone

Just wanted to say hi to some in-state members. I am a long time saltwater reef tank keeper and just sold my 300 gallon saltwater set up due to having 2 small kids and not enough time to keep up with it. I am now setting up a 20 long planted tank just to fill my fish keeping needs

I just picked up the tank today at my local pet supplies plus because they were having a $1/gallons sale. I have a big Drs. Foster & Smith order of supplies coming this week too.

I am located in Monroe, and we really don't have good stores here, so I am planning to make the trip to fantastic fins in livionia when i am ready to get some livestock. Everything i have read about fantastic fins has been great, i'm looking forward to going up there.

Anyways I think i will do set up a tank journal soon, i'll come back here and post the link if anyone is interested.

Welcome to the forum. Wow 300g that's huge. Will this be your first time working with freshwater or a planted tank? I'll keep a lookout for your journal.

Yeah i had an entire basement "fishroom", it was quite the set up. Was very sad to see it go, but with a 2 year old and 9 month old i just couldn't keep up anymore.

I have kept freshwater fish in the past, but the last time was probably about 10 years ago. I have never tried freshwater plants.

Ya don't blame you for that. I'm sure I'll do the same thing in the future when I have kids. My suggestion with plants is just take it slow. This site is definitely a great site for plant knowledge. What kind of plants are you thinking?

I am going for the low light low tech, so i only ordered 1 T8 bulb. after i add 3 bags of Eco-complete it should only be about 9" to the substrate, so i'm hoping that will be enough for low light plants. i have read that anubias & java fern would probably do well, not sure what else to put in there. Looking at live aquaria there seems to be several species of anubias, not sure if they are all considered low light or if some require higher light.

what part of MI you from GM?

I am currently growing successfully a few different anubias, rotala and crypts in a 20G tall with a single T8 and DIY CO2 so you should be just fine.

what LFS are good for FW in the metro area? I have been going to saltwater stores for so long I am not familiar with the FW stores.
