Hair algae

Has anyone used that chemical at home depot that's supposed to rid pond algae? I have peacock cichlids with about a dozen babies and don't want to kill them but the hair algae is totally taking over my pond! Btw I have a 150 gal stock tank with a few Val and crypt plants, and chiclids swimming around.

I see 2 products available at HD sold as algaecides. The Becket product says "Safe for fish and plants" but the other one does not, in the description.
However, they seem to be the same active ingredient.
Further investigation of literature seems to me that the ingredients are NOT fish-safe, so I would not use either of these products to kill algae in a pond with fish.

well i would say that there comes a liquid for getting rid of hair algae and it dosent causes any harm to fishes as i have used it many times and it also helps in cleaning the water it comes in both green and blue color you can have this liquid from stores nearby your house

Hair Algae sucks. The only way I got rid of it was less light and manually removing as much of it as I could. But being that this is a pond, these don't seem like viable options. Cichlids are hardy fish. They can probably handle most chemical products that are indeed safe for fish.

Ponds should have 80% surface coverage. Without this surface coverage you will have algae galore. I suggest purchasing a water lily, as well as other surface plants.
A ponds surface should be 1/3 floaters to suck up extra nutrients and prevent algae.
Those are the basic rules for algae control in ponds...

I threw in 7 long fin rosy barbs. They attacked the algae! Pretty much reduced it by 75%. I headed out and picking up some lilies tomorrow. Thx. Btw here's one of my cichlids...

Nice looking Cichlid. I was wondering where you lived that you could keep Cichlids year round, outdoors in a pond. Until I looked at your profile. I was born and raised in Hawaii, loved it! In some of the ponds at the bottom of waterfalls on Oahu I would always see a ton of Pleco's in them, and saw all kinds of tropical fish that people on the island must have dumped in the streams and ponds.

Accually the story to my pond is funny. My friend gave me a stock tank for watering cattle and it filled with rain water sitting in my back yard. A friend out of the blues asked if I had a tank for these cichlids he's raising so just by chance I had this pond! It's nothing to look at but now I've got over a dozen cichlids and they look great!

That's totally cool. You know the other thing that is really cool living in Hawaii? If you have a saltwater tank you can catch many of the fish, creatures that you want right there in your own backyard. A few of my friends had some really cool saltwater tanks in which everything stocked in the tank was caught. And you are in Hilo, aren't the opae shrimp (forgot their name) from the big Island?
