Baby goldies in the winter?
So summer is over soon and I have a batch of baby goldfish in the pond.
They range from 1-3 inches. The mom and dad sadly disappeared probably due to predation. That's why the eggs had a chance to develop to be honest. The adults wintered fine but wondering if the babies can winter. ps. Should I cull the brown goldfish? They haven't developed any coloring like their siblings.

in my opinion and from keeping fancy expensive goldfish in the past. they should be ok. tho some will die.
coloration varies from goldfish to goldfish some show colors faster then others. u should be culling deform ones. with crooked spines, extra tail, hard time swimming etc... |

They will be just fine over winter as long as the top of the pond doesn't freeze solid. And as far a culling the brown ones I would wait because those brown ones will turn gold with time. I have ones that were gold that turned all white. It's comletely normal for comets(I'm assuming this is what you have) to change colors.

Thanks. They are shubukins. If the stay brown I think they'll outlive their siblings since they're harder to see. The colorful ones are easy targets.
Too bad the adults are gone. They were beautiful.

I'm going to have to redesign and put up my motion sensor scare-crow again.
I had lights that would turn on when I critter comes by the pond but it became a problem it'd wake me up at night. I guess the ultrasonic blast should be enough.

Have you tried installing medium gauge netting above the pond (provided its small enough)... even a partial cover would offer safety

Yeah, I put netting up mostly during the fall to protect it from leaves. Having a net on all the time defeats the purpose of a pond I think
