Question

How much is too much light? Lighting options for a 20H

Hello lighting experts,

I'm in the process of setting up a new 20H, and I'd really appreciate advice on lighting options. The 20H will be a Southeast Asian biotope tank, with java ferns, moss, cryptocorynes and vallisneria in a substrate of eco-complete. Fish will include a betta, a couple of dwarf gouramis, maybe some danios and some loaches. I'll add more plants as the tank establishes itself.

I understand that the minimum wpg is ~2.5, but is there a rule for determining the maximum wpg for a tank? What is the best wpg for my 20H setup?

At first, I was going to get the 1 x 65w Coralife hood.....but now it seems that 65wpg will put me into the "low light" range.
Is 130w (2x65) or 110w (2x55) way too much light for a 20H?
Should I go with a 72w (2x36) hood?

Thanks so much!!

Default Not a lighting expert, but...

You will easily be able to grow the listed plants with a single 65w fixture. IMO you will be able to grow most plants with that set up. DIY CO2 will be a good idea as well.

Most rules in this hobby are at most guidelines. That said the more light on a tank the more diligent you must be in your fert schedule and maintenance of CO2 levels.

Agreed...you'll be fine with the 65w fixture...not to mention you're actually at the "3 wpg" area. I have the same on a 29g (same height) and my plants grow fine with good ferts and lots of co2.

With 3wpg you really, really, really need to have CO2! You don't mention that anywhere. If you're not going to have CO2 then you'll have way too much light and a mess on your hands...
