If you want a carnivorous water plant that if like a venus fly trap check out Aldrovanda vesiculosa (water wheel plant). Here is a little info on this plant.

i had venus fly traps for a while and i fed it lady bugs just for fun and i'm pretty sure it killed them

i don't think they could digest the hard shells.

I could be wrong...but I was under the impression that beetles made up a significant % of their prey in the wild.

hm, you're probably right. i had never kept a fly traps before so it really could have been anything
