planaria

I hava a huge outbreak of planaria in my 5 gallon tank and I can't figure out why. The tank has only been set up for a month and only has plants in it but no fish or shrimp. What might be causing this outbreak?

They came in on your plants. Happened to me. Gross.. i know.. they seem to do well on just plant matter.. ive even seen them climb up foggy glass in my "dry" tank...

they say dog dewormer works and is shrimp and oto safe... But that is not of concern for you at the moment... So youre free to experiment.

When you put fish in the tank you'll never see them again, no worries. I always get an explosion of them in new tanks, sorta like algae. They feed on decaying plant matter while plants are adjusting to your tank. There's nothing you did wrong. Your fish will love them (:

Now, if this is going to be a shrimp-only tank, you can consider fenbendiazole. But only if they don't go away on their own after a while and still bug you.
