alternatives to a 40b
I went to a local fish store and they have a rimless tank that is 38x15x21. Its low iron glass that's 3/8 thick and has black silicone which seems to be very clean.
I always liked the 40gb and petco has their $1/gal sale. The company wants 190$ for this tank plus a dual t5ho oddesea light fixture. But the standard 40b is only 16" high, not much for a show tank. Do you think the size is a good desirable size? Im not into using tall plants, hense the reason I didn't like my 55g much. Any feedback id appreciate it.

To me, it almost is like a bigger 29 gallon, which I don't personally like the dimensions of. You can make an awesome 29 gallon but it's not so great for any hardscape. This is a bit deeper but not much.
It depends on what you are doing, I personally just got rid of my 29 and I am glad to see it go. This would be very similar just bigger in every way.

If you want a rimless check out mr aqua I think they have one that is 18x18x36 which in my opinion are great dimensions for a med sized tank. ADA also has them just a little more pricy.

With those dims, I came up with a 49g tank. $190<$40. I'd take 18 wide over 15. Really it depends on the fish you plan to house. Most fish don't use all three levels of an aquarium. If you have fish that like the upper regions then taller would be better. If you have fish that are lower, they will like longer and wider.
In my case I had planned to build 4 tanks of 48x18x18 in cel cast. The cost per tank would have been $228 from a local plastic shop with a $60 per hr shop cutting fee. $228<$40 was a sacrifice I was willing to make. A $1 per gallon sale saved me $992 bucks. Even the standard 55g would only cost you $55 bucks instead of $190. |

Thanks for the opinions.
I am just not sure ill be happy with the height of the 40b. It seems short to me. I personally dont like the height of my 55 (to tall but I made it work), but it would be nice if the 40b would be higher than 16''....I just dont want a show tank that "looks" small, as well as a tank that is not porportionate. You guys may be right that this tank is a little tall. For the fishes, I didnt even think about it. I was just going to mainly do an aquascape and probably (depending on the color of the plants) have rummy nose tetras or neon tetras, as well as a bunch of shrimp...perhaps some cories as well. My aquascape will probably have quite a bit of ADA soil, im probably going to have it thick in the back. Food for thought, the space that I have only has room for a 40'' wide aquarium, and a max of 19'' deep.

Standard 75 $180 plus free shipping. I know it's the same height as a 55, but it sure doesn't seem like it to me. I am short 5'1" and have super short arms so I am limited on how big of a tank I can go. This is the biggest for me.

if you're getting a 75, get a 90 instead.

I got a 40B from petco and am excited to set it up. The dimensions look much easier to work in, but it obviously won't work with taller plants or higher aquascapes
I'm just putting a single low-level predator in mind with driftwood, anubias, ferns, etc to keep it simple this time around though

I like the footprint of the 40b, I get really tempted to swap my 55 over to one.
What I really need is more room and money and just have both lol

The low dimensions also allow a scape that emerges above the water line, without buying wood/rocks that have odd or large dimensions.

Do you guys think the tank wont look funny with the tank being only 16" high? In a living room? Ill probably be building a stand around 35" high.
I also saw a 50g (but may have to special order from petco) that's 36"x19"x18. I don't know if that's the true dimmensions but I saw it on a reference chart.

IMHO 40b is just about as close to a balanced look as you can get without doing something really big. It has lots of front to back room to really add dimension and complexity and plenty of height for most plants. it is wide enough to accommodate both structure and clear spaces for fish comfort and view ability. That is all my opinion though but in that size range I really think it is a VERY well balanced tank giving enough of each dimension to give you allot of flexibility to create almost any type of aquascape you like other then a really tall one and then the 29 gallon is really better suited for tall but you lose allot of front to back with that tank and the balance of dimensions that the 40b offers... just my $.02 Good Luck!
