I prefer layout number 5 or 7. Though, the one in the very first post is terrific.
And focal point? The wood is the focal point! It's great. About wood being near the glass: As long as you can fit a cotton swab between it and the glass, you can use the Two Little Fishies magnet cleaner with ease.

i like #5 and #8 a lot, but #8 is so close to the glass ;u;. i just like how it spreads out, it looks like roots or something... could look really nice buried in substrate.
