Is this enough light?

I have a desk lamp with a 40 watt bulb lighting my 5 gal betta tankk. I have a java fern, an anubia, some water wisteria, and a few stems of anarchis.

do you mean a CFL forty watt equivalent? o_O
if it's incandescent, get a CFL instead because incandescents make too much heat...
40 watt equivalent would work well though. you have good low light plants.

Im planning on getting a cfl tonight. Any idea on wattage?

I would get a 26watt Spiral CFL (100watt incadescent equivalent).

That wisteria's lower leaves will get holes without enought light.

The anacharis or elodea is better suited for coldwater tanks, it will melt in warm water. Consider getting some ludwigia repens,

I had a 5.5gal with a 26watt cfl and I had to downgrade to a 13watt b/c it was too much light, I even raised like 6" above the tank and it was still growing algae. No problems with the 13 though, and I am able to grow high-light plants.

I use a 13w cfl on my 5gal. A 14w might be to much.
