do I really have to put this driftwood back?

Started tearing down the lime green tank today that I posted about last week.

In it there is a HUGE piece of driftwood. My personal opinion to big for the tank. It is so messy.

Do shrimp really get much benefit from driftwood? Do I really have to put it back?

I dont have any kind of saw or axe, but if I whacked it hard with a hammer do you think it would break into smaller pieces

should probably dry it out in the sun imo first (I'm thinking it might of absorbed a lot of water from being in the tank for however long it was in there for).

then maybe it will break into smaller pieces.

and you don't HAVE to put it back if you don't WANT to.

The only benefits the driftwood gives the shrimp is a hiding place (if there are holes in it) and a good place to graze on.

It's all about what you want your tank to look like. DW can be very beneficial because it's slathered in biofilm and can be a part of an overall plan to lower pH if needed. Plus it's a great place to attach mosses. I've got two pieces of DW in my soon-to-be OEBT tank and each is covered in moss.

If you don't like the look of the DW you have, check the SnS for people selling cholla wood. You can use that in place of DW and shrimp really dig it. HighDesert has some and so does NeoShrimp, but there are others.

I don't mind driftwood but this piece takes up over half the tank. maybe I will find something smaller to add later but once I set it back up I probably wont want to mess with it again.

It's an aesthetic addition, unless you're relying on it to drop your ph by releasing tannins. Perhaps throw in something for hiding places after you've removed it. Preggo shrimps like to go into solitary confinement when they're in labor and tired.
