I was thinking the same, I don't see why it wouldn't work but I have never seen it set up that way, except when someone is using an inline solenoid, so it has to work fine. If you are using a bubble counter on the regulator, that will make it more bulky as you need an extra "L" fitting or have the solenoid pointing upwards, making it taller.
I don't see any advantage of changing it.
