RC cars.....
I am more and more fascinated by RC cars (electric) and want to get into the hobby. Really don't have much experiences with it other than as a kid I loved to play with my uncle's RC cars. I am particularly interested in rally cars. I know some of them are designed to be on-road. It seems 1/10 scale is the normal size. They aren't expensive the way I see it. You can get a kit and start off with $300. Anything I should be aware off? Such as the type of RC cars I should avoid? I know about Tower Hobbies. And recently I discover RC Planet. They seem to have some good selections of cars too.
Of course, can you get tire of the hobby after a while?

It's been a while since I've had enough money for multiple hobbies so I'm not really in the know anymore but this looks fun if you're into rally:

Cool stuff....I don't really need to spend any more money on my tank now, other than your usual maintenance stuff. The initial price is steep with a high tech tank. The thing is that they don't break due to frequent usages.

My biggest piece of advise is to find a good, local hobby shop. The support you will get from buying from a good local shop is well worth the extra few bucks you spend. A lot of them will offer discounts on parts and supplies after you buy a car from them. I have been in to it on and off for a long time and am thinking about getting in to racing the short course trucks. I have done everything from cars to scratch built rock crawlers to helicopters. Haven't been in to it for a year or 2 because like oldpunk, can't really afford nor do I have the time for too many hobbies.

Raxxas or axial there are other good brand but I prefer any of these two. i got a full setup for 280$ traxxas summit vxl I think. You can get a cheaper kit and upgrade as you go. Most hobbyist around here will give you discount the more you go and get to know them.

Like everything else they can get expensive, it's been some time but I used to race on carpet tracks which are very fast and the grip is crazy and on indoor dirt tracks where the power slide is king. My last really fast car was long ago but I had 3K into one car, then add batteries and a good radio, but they are a lot of fun.

What do you guys think about the pre-assembled or RTR kit? I suck at painting the car body. I am particularly interested in the Tamiya selections since their models are modeled after the real life cars.

If you want to go with a tamiya car I recommend the tt01. I have one of them and it's a blast to run and pretty cheap. Not sure if it comes ready to run though. Some other good options are a traxxas slash or a losi mini 8ight.

For electric, you really can't beat the brushless. I had a traxxis e-revo vxl, 1/10th.. it was freaking amazing! I upgraded to the lipo batteries and even with the lower gearing it probably topped out around 45mph. there is a video of one on Youtube clocked at almost 80 mph.... [censored][censored][censored][censored] now I want another one!!

Brushless is without a doubt the way to go. I'm running a 5000kv tacon brushless motor in my slash on 2 cell lipo batteries and it flies. I own nitro trucks too but I think if I buy anymore kits they'll only be electric since for the most part they're faster and easier to work on.

If you thought planted tanks were a money pit, just wait until you get into RC cars. You're never going to be happy. You're going to want to go faster, make the car lighter and will be constantly replacing parts if you hit into things. I've spent hundreds on these damn cars and I'm happy to be out of the hobby for a second time (I always get dragged back in; the same with planted tanks). I usually bought cars in the 1:28 scale like X-mods (which are really cheap and fun to modify) and Mini-Z's which are more expensive, yet more precise.

Let's see. $150 for the kit. $70 for the radio system. $100 for the brushless motor system. $100 for 2 lipo batteries and charger. It is adding up quick...

Brushless will eat up nitro cars all day long! I do love nitro too but I also doubt I will buy another nitro. A good charger and stock of lipos and I am set for a day at the track.
