Clear in the AM Green in the PM
I am still trying to get my setting right in my new 30 gallon shrimp tank. I have had an issue with green water, so I cut back my light and did 1/3 water change.
The tank looked really good this morning but 3 hours after turning the lights and CO2 on I am looking green and a little cloudy. Any ideas? Its a 30 gallon with 36" 2x39 T5HO with pressurized CO2 I also does pfertz high tech I have HC, Dwarf Hair Grass and some floating Brazilian Pennywort. Plants and shrimp seem to be doing fine, but the water looks terrible. Does too much NPK+Micros contribute to algae? Should I cut back on the pfertz? Also I have this spider web looking stuff on my substrate. thanks. |

Algae Grower
|
I had the opposite issue, cloudy at night & morning and clear in the evening. This went on every day for about 3 weeks. The water didn't look that green, but putting my had in it resulted in a green hand
Of course it went away right before my UV sterilizer arrived Edit: I should also mention that I first reduced my light intensity which was likely the root cause. |

I've never had algae due to ferts. Unless you count lack of ferts...
Cut the light back or raise it and do lots of water changes. How old is the tank, any new stock added lately? Is it cycled? Is it well kept? Usually green water will break out when the quality goes south. Ammonia helps too. You could add some fast growers, but don't cut your co2 or ferts because slowing down the plant growth of whatever you already have isn't going to help you. BTW, you have a lot of light. That's probably the key to your algae issues. Make sure you have good co2 levels too. Is there any fert you could be lacking?
