Algae Grower
|
Well here is my second problem with algae.
I had the long green hair algae first and got rid of it. Now I have this "brownish" stuff growing over everything. I have brushed it off while doing a water change, which I do 25% weekly, for about 3 weeks now. It seems to grow back twice as fast after. Please look at the pictures. I did a water change on friday and didn't have any of this then. Now look at it! I have the lights on for 10.5 hrs I dose once a week (about 75% of reccomended) Any Ideas? 100 Gal - 260watt lighting CF tubes 2-65 watt 10000°K bulbs and 2-65 watt Actinic - DIY CO2 - Eheim 2229 W/D filter Fish load: 4 JW Discus - 20 Cardniel neons - 2 Rams - 5 Ottos - 1 albino Bristlenose Pleco - 2 Clown Loachs - Here is my water paramiters PH: 7.0 - Nitrate - .5 - Phosphate .5 - amm and nitrite 0

Just give it some time. Your aquarium is still very new, and needs some time to find it's balance. I posted some similar algae pics on my "Journal" thread. My algae disappeared with time and I am sure yours will go away with time.

During this stage of your tank be sure to keep good water current in the tank and the filters cleaned regularly.
Dead spots in the tank help algae get a hold quicker. Pretend it isnt there and soon it wont be... one more thing, by the looks of the photos you might also consider adding more fast growing plants to help it along in this stage. Going from hair algae to the brown gook is very common.

Two things I noticed. I have read that there can be problems with the 10k and actinic bulbs being algae prone. I don't have any personal experience but that did stick out in your post.
Also, what are you dosing with? PMDD? I usually dose my ferts daily so that there is not a "fert bomb" all at once. I actually read about one guy who had a trickle fert system set up so that the fertilizers were always being added in a very diluted form. |

Those actinic bulbs are doing very little or nothing for plant growth. See if you can swap them out for some 6500K bulbs or something else more conducive to growing plants. Even a good Daylight bulb would be better than those actinics. The rest of the advice the other guys gave you is also very sound advice.

Agreed, get rid of the actinics, get two bulbs with 6500k rating this will even out your spectrum and give the plants a better chance at growing strong.
In addition the DIY CO2 is not really recommended for a tank that size. I have a 90g with pressurised and it pumps out heaps of CO2 just to keep the PH at 6.8. I don't think that a DIY unit will even come close to maintaining your PH. Worth considering investing. Not only this, but the plants will be starved for CO2 and will not grow as quick, which in turn means that algae can take a hold. Which it has clearly done. Take my recommendation get the CO2, and you will be selling plants back to the LFS before you know it. That will help to make up the cost. BTW I think aquabotanic sells CO2 gear for quite cheap. Pity they are not located in Australia. Paul
