tanks for cheap?

Hey I'm plannin on buyin a new tank with a stand for a reasonable amount. Im torn between this 46 gallon bowfront with a this nice stainless steal stand at petsmart but the price for both is ridiculous. Or i could get a 55 gallon with a stand but havent looked into the prices of those. But was wonderin if and when you guys go to the lfs if u can keep and eye out for any of those 2 tanks that at least cost less or equal to 400$ for both tank and stand. Thanx

Wookie,

I've had luck buying tanks and equipment on eBay for a fraction of their original price. There is a lot of near new stuff out there from folks who got into the hobby on a whim and decided shortly after that fish keeping isn't for them.

When you do a search, do it buy distance. Almost without exception you will have to pick up the tanks and stands because shipping them is expensive and risky.

Good luck...

I have purchased two tanks from www.glasscages.com with great success; one was a 240g (8'x x2' x 2') and the other was a 180g (6' x 2' x 2'). I lived in northern Indiana at the time and had them shipped, although I had to pick them up from the trucking company. I had a 3/4 ton truck with 8' bed, so it was no problem. Both were saltwater tanks that are custom made (with all the holes/overflows in the exact places I specified). Since the time I ordered those tanks, GlassCages has really expanded their line of products!!

Most local tanks have seemed pretty inexpensive to me. Lights and cabinets on the other hand... I really don't have the time to diy, but will before I pay some of those prices ($40 of lumber, $20 of stain and 4 hrs of work saved me $200-$300 in a stand).

(fwiw, I worked in assemply line carpentry as well as construction once upon a time - the work does not scare me, and I enjoy it - just don't always have the time to play and build everything myself).

I think used aquariums are a good deal. Most sold are in really good condition. In the SF bay area, there is something called craigslist which is a posting for all the old/new stuff for sale or free. Awesome consumer tool. It also cuts down hugely on our waste.

I got my 30 gallon free off of it. I saw a 120 gallon full setup go free recently. Maybe there maybe a site like that for your local area.

Also used stands can be easily stained again for reuse. It took me and my cousin half a day together to reinforce and to stain a 55 gallon stand.

I honestly don't consider any new tank cheap anymore.

Arround Austin, one is freecycle. Could as gf about the other one - think freecycle is a national thing with local chapters.

I gave away a 30 gallon a couple months ago - was honest about it. Stand was fine, but tank had a leak. Figured someone else could use it as a teranium or something. It was a hex and I did not think it was worth resealing - I tried on one once before without much success.

But back to my original post - to me tanks are fairly inexpensive - so if you can even only find a used stand cheep you are way ahead of the game.

Thumbs up

I just bought a 65 gallon not too long ago. The cheapest place I found was Fishey Buisness in Longwood. They had to order the tank but it was there in 2-3 days. I paid $120 for the tank and the two glass toppers. As for the stand dependinig on what you want the cheapest stands I have found are in Pet Suppermarket. Also their tanks were only about 5-10 more than Fishey Buisness. Hope this of help. Depending on where you live if you need help transporting the tank IM me I have a big p/u.

Before you decide on a 55, make sure you realize the dimensions of that tank. It is very narrow, and if aquascaping is something you want to do, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole! Look into a 50 breeder instead, much better dimensions. My .02 worth.
