I noticed a tiny amount of grey hair-looking algae growing on my fake cloth plant in my 29 recently, I've never had it before. The tank is also full of live plants, and....mollies and a bn pleco. They aren't touching the stuff. Like the OP I'm trying to figure out the cause and how to get rid of it, in my case I think I will just toss the plant and cross my fingers it doesn't show up on any of my live plants.

I had a major hair algae outbreak and once I added 2 American flag fish, the problem got fixes within 2 weeks. They are the best.

I just got 2SAE and 3 flag fish. I've already seen the sae ripping black brush algae off a couple leaves, and the FF are taking care of the green hair algae. The tank already had BN and several nerites.

First though I had to educate the store manager. She told me SAE was flying fox, False SAE was true SAE, and she had one flying fox but didn't know what it was.

Do your research.

I have a 5 gallon tank that has no plants in it, but has some fake decorations. Recently this has become covered with hair algae. I took one decoration and put it in the tank that houses my Amano, corydora catfish and oto. All of them ate off of it. I think the oto and amano did the most damage but cleaned it all up. Not sparkling clean, but they did eat it.
