I use Stoners brand spray foam glass cleaner and micro fiber rags--one to clean and one to buff---spotless car windows and spotless tank glass.

NOW, if I could only do the same with the inside glass--blasted BBA...

Never had an issue with any glass cleaner. I just spray the rag instead of the tank, before wiping it down.

I use a magic eraser and a clean towel. Gets any dried water spot off and leaves the glass sparkling clean. You could use newspaper instead of a clean towel if your towels leave streaks. Magic erasers (the plain kind) can even be used inside the tank while fish are in it. Great for cleaning the last bits of algae off. Also works on acrylic without scratching.

You can use the original or the extra power, but not the bathroom ones (those have chemicals in them).

This is a recipe I read somewhere a long time ago...

I fill a spray bottle with half vinegar, half water, and a good squirt (tablespoon) of dish detergent. Spray a bit on glass, wipe clean with paper towel. Vinegar works exceptionally well for those hard water deposits, and adding a bit of dish soap takes care of streaks.

I don't mind the slight vinegar smell... disappears soon. Some of the commercial cleaners give me a headache. Can't imagine them being good for fish.

Be very careful when mixing stuff though so you don't accidentally re-invent some deadly nerve gas. Especially bleach can create some nasty fumes when mixed improperly.

I use whatever window cleaner I have on hand. With open top tanks. Spray cautiously. It isn't as if you're going to magically have it go through the glass....

I've been doing it on mine and clients tanks for a decade.

Distilled water is the best IMO as it will not leave spots on your glass.
It isn't as if we're suggesting the use of radioactive waste... So lets say a touch of ammonia gets in there.... ok..... and?

I think people are worrying about nothing. Don't be an idiot and you'll be fine.

Agreed.. People over think things like this a ton. Aquarium glass is just that, glass. How do you clean windows? Apply it to your tank, just don't get reckless and spray it willy nilly all over everything. I clean all my tanks with off brand windex from Walgreens, it's cheap, last a long time, etc.

This is another one of those things people are overly cautious about. This, chlorine, and bleach. Not particularly a bad thing, it's just not really necessary

I just worry about having an "idiot moment".

If you feel uneasy, spray the paper towel etc not the glass. Then there's no way anything wrong can happen

I use the same. Vinegar and water work better than paper towel and blue fluid.

I just use straight up distilled vinegar to clean all my glass surfaces. It stinks but it works and is streak free.

I always heavily spray all six sides of my open top rimless aquarium directly with windex, then wipe down with a paper towel. Then I throw the paper towel into the aquarium so my fish can play with it.

As others have said, don't overthink it.

I'm ok using windex but unlike the above posters my personal policy is that I spray it on a paper towel in the kitchen (away from the tank) and then I wipe down the glass. No need to spray a mist of this ammonia/chemical mix right next to the tank.

A poster on barr report killed many of his fish just a few weeks ago by getting windex in the tank. No need to risk this imo!!!!

I had an incident myself where now my other chemical policy is that I don't clean my cats litterbox (with Chlorox) on the same day as tank WC. Contaminated hands killed 20 fish I had in QT.

Every time I use a cleaner like windex, the glass develops a hazy film within a few days and keeps needing to be cleaned.

My favorite way to clean the glass is with a hand held steamer. The one I have has a rubber squeegy attachment specially for steam cleaning windows. It works great and the glass stays filmless for weeks.
