Breeding is my hobby

I'm an old guy that started in fish keeping 60 years ago. Quite by accident my first tank, a ten, was also a breeding experience - Blue Gouramis. I've been in and out of the hobby ever since. My latest project was Firemouth Cichlids. I raised a tank full with no thought as to how to find a home for them. It seems that the stores here in north central West Virginia will sell fish and supplies but won't take fish even as a gift. Finally got someone over the radio to come to the house and take the tank full for distribution to friends.

I would very much like to meet other West Virginians and share stories and perhaps fish.

I don't do fish anymore but have converted to a shrimp guy.

I know nothng about the shrimp currently being kept in the hobby. 40-some years ago I wrote an article for TFH on native freshwater shrimp in Hawaii (a simular species lives in caves in Tenn). The stores around here don't stock shrimp and badmouth them when I ask about them. A little info please....

im down here in beckley. welcome. i'm trying to breed rili shrimp right now and am looking for fish for my 29 gallon planted tank.

Hi Guys,
I'm a new return to the hobby after a 30+ yr hiatus (have lived here in Berkeley county for 12 yrs, prior to that must admit to being a California native and fish were there!). Anyway currently have 2 fully planted FW tanks, my favorite is the one with 4 fresh water puffers, some gold tetras, a couple of Amano shrimp and red cherry shrimp (thought the puffers would grab them but they haven't).

My goal is to add a brackish tank and another FW tank (focus on cichlids who can tolerate our
water)am happy to trade the RCS offspring once my original stock really gets going. Also plants! Hope we all can stay in touch.

Curious ... what do they have to say about them?

Around here the word is that shrimp (unspecified kinds) are hard to keep and must be kept separate from fish. Is any of this true or am I to gather from previous remarks that some varieties do well with fish.

Off topic...Pem Corgi...My wife and I have lived with Pems both here and in Hawaii where we used them for cattle work and obedience trials. Our last Pem we had to put down last month - she had kidney failure, a 10-year old. We miss her!

Some shrimp are very easy (RCS) and some not so easy. As far as shrimp and fish, the only fish that is considered completely shrimp safe are otos. All others, it just depends on the shrimp and the fish. It's safe to assume that if you mix them, you will loose at least babies. So fish obviously will devour shrimp any chance they get, others may completely ignore them. Also, mixing them, you are much less likely to see your shrimp as they will spend much of their time in cover. I have a 75g tank. I had some tetras and I added some shrimp. I had a CO2 mishap and thought I killed off all the shrimp as I found some dead and didn't see them anymore after that. Couple months later, I decided to remove the fish and shortly after I discovered I actually had about 50 shrimp in my tank once they started coming out again.

Hello everyone. Complete newbie to this forum, but was very excited to see fellow "hillbillies" (we're allowed to call ourselves this right!?). I am up in Wheeling.

I have two 55g planted tanks. Just suffered serious setback in that I lost four discus to a parasite breakout that I have been able to treat I the past. Bummed, BUT not deterred. Moving forward but am going to take a break for the costs of the discus.

Welcome aboard, Babillba. I envy you your big tanks (I've ot three 10s) but not your discus problems. What parasite did you in?
