So i'm thinking about changing this pond up a bit... we've concluded that we can't keep koi in this pond. Our last two large koi were snatched by a large bird a few days ago. We've lost many, many koi to birds and we've struggled to find a way to prevent it. The koi are plenty large, they have lots of hiding places (rock caves, large ceramic tubes, etc), and we've tried many bird repellants.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else i could keep in this pond? I'd like to get a bunch of turtles, but my parents don't like that idea.

I keep koi in my pond even though I'm in the area of the nasty blue heron. I basically built a net out of somewhat thick steel wire and just tied a net over it. You'll probably have to make multiple nets since your pond is hella big and one big net would most likely morph. You also don't need to cover the entire pond since I only cover the places that the bird can actually stand.

Agreed, they have steel mesh you can use to cover your pond with. Don't forget to fasten the mesh under the rocks or something, so it doesn't move.

Or you can nail or glue in hooks to your rocks and then pull the net over the hooks. Although this didn't work for me since all the rocks on the side get wet in my pond

Like almost everyone else I think your pond looks great! I've got a mixed koi and goldfish pond and haven't got a skimmer
I'd be interested to know what problems I should be looking out for though so if I do get any I can catch them early? Viv |

There's the shade tree I was talking about.
I was in thr landscape business for 20+ years but never did any ponds, but I would love to have a waterfall and dry creek bed near my patio, I have the plans here on my computer I just need someone to loan me about $23K to get started.

Nice pond
What's a "true koi pond?" When I finally settle down to a place and get a property, I'm digging a 10k gallon ditch, throwing in 2 waterfalls, a stream, and getting butterfly/American koi local breeders sell for $2.5 / each, with the longest fins I can find :P They're hardy and beautiful. It will be epic. Who cares about what other people think?
