Tom, please give advice...

30-gallon cube tank
filled with R/O water - my tap water is horrible - pH: 8.4; hardness off the chart on the little stick; alkalinity: off the chart as well.

I would love to breed to proven Bolivian Rams; grow beautiful SA plants. I have eco-complete and tahitian moon sand.

I've ordered gH and kH test kits.

I have ordered dry ferts from Greg Watson.

Thanks for your time!

I assume you ordered some GH building and have baking soda or plan to blend a little of the tap with RO?

Shoot for a KH of 2, GH of about 3-4.
You can use SeaChem Equilibrium for GH.

I'd do 50% weekly changes.
Adjust GH/KH.

Dose 1/4 teaspoon of KNO3 2-3x a week
Dose KH2PO4, 1/16 teaspoon 2-3x a week
Traces: 5mls 2-3x a week.
Good CO2, 30ppm.

Plant dense, do not use any large swords, provide areas for breeding.
Feed frequently rather than a lot at once. Live brine with other food.

Regards,
Tom Barr

Tom -- why do you not recommend planting any large swords?

Thanks,

Jim

They are weeds.
Errr........trees.......:-)

Micro tennellus, a few others are good.

I have a 350 gal, we did a 500 gal for MBA, those types of tanks can handle long term swords. Or you can remove them every 2-4 months, hack them back good, uproot them etc.

Infernal weed.

Ok, here are my parameters as of today (I measured three times today - to make sure I give adequate information to you guys):

8:30 am; 5:00 pm; 11:45 pm
CO2: 21 ppm; 48 ppm; 12-14 ppm
NO3: 12-15; 12-15; 12-15
PO4: 0.5; 0.5; 0.5
GH: 3.0; 3.0; 3.0
KH: 4-4.5; 4-4.5; 4-4.5
pH: 6.8-6.9; 6.4; 7.0

My question is: will these conditions facilitate plant growth to the point that the plants will outcompete the algae? I am fighting what I think is referred to as BBA.

I also read that dosing Potassium Sulfate increases the plants' use of Nitrates. Should I be adding Potassium Sulfate to my tank every other day as well - to keep the 20 ppm up?
