Question

Adjusting flow on the SPEC.

I see that there are quite a few Fluval Spec owners here so I thought this might be the forum to ask!

I want to put a betta in my new Spec, but the flow is very strong. What are some tricks that you have employed to reduce the current?

Someone mentioned running it without the tubing. Could I do that and stuff the outflow compartment with sponges?

Cheers. Will post photos once I solve this dilemma.

Take a sharp knife or razor and make a slit or two in the rubber return hose. I saw someone else mention this and tried it on mine and it worked great.

Yes, making holes in the rubber return tube helps reduce the flow. The added benefit is it allows for better circulation in the pump compartment, making for a perfect spot for a heater. (without the holes that chamber is too stagnant to heat very effectively)

Excellent idea. Thank you.

I'm going to put in extra sponges in the intake area. Hopefully this combination will work.

I blocked off a part of the outlet with silicone.
