I have been researching the XP1, XP2, and XP3. I have read a lot about them, and that how an XP2 would be overkill for a 29 gallon because it would have too much water movement. If I were to go with a canister filter I would go with one of these models because of the great things I have heard from them. My only questions are:

1) Which model would be ideal for a 29 gallon, without making it a wave-pool?

2) Does it come with any media? If not what would you suggest I use?

3) Is there anything else i need to order for this filter that does not come with it?

4) Does anyone have pictures of the intake and output tube? I have yet to see pictures of those.

Thank you as always.

You must have missed this post. I use a XP-2 on a 29 gallon tank. It works fine.

The XP series come with fine and coarse sponges, a polishing pad, either activated carbon or Bio-Chem packet, and the new ones come with some ceramic media. That being said you will still have room in an XP-2 for something else. I suggest the Bio-Chem Stars.'

I would stay away from the XP-1 as it only has one media basket.

The latest 4th generation Fluval canisters models are very good filters. Iíve used a 204 on my 29gal non-planted for over a year with no problems whatsoever and intend to keep using it when I switch this tank to a planted version. This filter is rated at 180gph and is extremely quiet, very easy to clean, has 3 media baskets, actually four if you count the very top tray.

Planted tanks do not need excessive water movement

180gph for a 29gal is not underkill.. For a 29gal planted tank... IMO it's just about right. Unnecessary agitation (tidal waves, vortex whirlpools) will cause loss of C02.

My 2cents worth

I love my Eheims. They are silent and easy to maintain. I didn't mind paying a bit more because they are quality machines with many "customizable" accessories.

I have heard a lot about accessories for the XP2. Is there a built in heater? I currently use a heater that I would trust my life with. If there is a internal heater for the XP2, does anyone have any experience with them?

There is no heater in the XP series. The only filters I know that have heaters are some models of Eheim.

As far as I know only the Eheim has a heater...the Rena Filstars do not.

I am running an Eheim 2126 thermofilter. I love it!
PM if you have any questions about it.
