Springfield, MA here. Have a 5 gallon planted tank (converted to planted in sept 2011) that started off as just an African Dwarf Frog tank, but now as of recently they have 2 oto and 5 cherry shrimp friends (who are naturally all females despite requesting both if possible :/ sigh).

Gloucester...... new to fishkeeping. Took my first hour (and some change...tolls) to Tropical Isle last week. Older woman at the register was very "short" with me. I jokingly asked "do I need to get a number to find help?" She replied without so much as a smile "just ask someone who works here"......to which I replied "and who might that be?"..she replied "anyone with a blue shirt on".....Thanx! The staff member who ended up helping me was very nice and very patient....although she told me that because my tap H20 (I brought in a sample) contained .25 of Ammonia I had two choices...either I plan on purchasing bottled water every time I did a water change or buy an API Water Filter ($80.00). I bought the filter......it leaked like a sieve.....piece of crap!
I drove out there again today to return "piece of crap"...same woman at register....same sunny attitude! LOL! Bought some Wisteria and some Cories....young woman who "helped" me was very impatient and left me with the impression that she was rushing me through my purchase and had zero interest in helping me with my decision, even my 13 yr old niece commented that "that lady doesn't seem to care about our questions". I won't be going back there......not worth the gas money. I may try Skipton's....any other suggestions from my fellow eastern ma fish lovers? |

I suggest Boston Pets in Peabody for some equipment. Skiptons is a must stop by. and IF you are down south try Lovely Pets (they are hit or miss depending on what you are looking for).

Check out http://kensfish.com/ aginst other places for equipment and his food it pretty good also. All food is packed in 1/2lb packs it stays fresher longer. He has some deals and lives in Ma on the south shore. You can even stop by and chek out his place(house) as he has just about all you need. Call and see before you go because he does shows all over the place.

Had my first tank in 1966 - a 15 gallon long with swordtails and vallisneria. My last in 1994 - a 55 gallon black water tetra & crypt tank. Lots in between. |

I'm down in Randolph, but I work 2 jobs in Boston (my "day" job Mon-Fri, and Saturdays (and some Sundays) at a LFS in Boston).
I also tend to frequent the Boston Aquariums Society meetings, annual auctions, and annual Fish Expo, as well as the auctions of the NH, RI, and Springfield clubs when possible. I've got a handful of tanks, almost all contain plants but none are really AGA-style "planted" aquaria -- I have no artistic skills whatso-ever ! |
