Has anyone used an Eheim surface extractor on your cannistor filters? I have a white film constantly on the surface and is cutting down on the light getting through. Do they create much surface agitation? Do they make a sucking noise? Are they really bulky? Thanks

try a couple of black molly's... they love to suck the film of the surface.

I've got a ton of them and they do nothing for the scum.

I've always heard it was an organic film caused by the decomposition of fish food and plant matter.
I had it for a while in my 250 gal. but now it all but disappeared. I thought about getting an Eheim surface extractor but read that they were a PITA and didn't work that well. I imagine that in a heavily planted tank you'd have a heck of a time keeping plants matter out of it. |

the scum is protein baby! I donno where it is coming from, but closed aquarium bound tohave that! In nature the water is always refreshed in the water cycle( evaporation~rain~condensation~etc~etc) thats why we will see them in our aquarium and not nature

I have an Eheim surface skimmer and think that they do a great job.
I have put mine on a pro 2 2026, so I had to reduce the flow a little to stop rattling of the bottom valve. They do not produce any surface agitation and they are not bulky. Hope this helped. Rumple

Stupid question: is it just the black mollies that go for the surface scum? I have mollies, but no black.

Rumples..
What is the tubing size on the surface extractor? 16/22 or 12/16? Did you have to downsize from 16/22 to 12/16 to fit the surface extractor? Mike

No, I did not have to down size. The tubing on the Eheim ( hard plastic) fits straight into the surface skimmer. All I did was cut a piece off the hard plastic so that the skimmer still met the surfce of the water.

I don't know for certain, but it is the largest size for hard plastic I think it is 16mm.
Sorry can help more than that. Rumple
