Anubias nana with firm brown patches on rhizome

Hi all,

Newbie here. I'd like some advice on how best to take care of my anubias nana plant. I got it from PetSmart and it alternated between floating in a bucket and tied to a fake rock in a betta tank for a couple weeks (really wasn't a priority). No fertilizer during this time and several of the big leaves melted off. Eventually I got Flourish (comprehensive) and it's floating in a vase with that now till I set up a planted tank. The leaves have stopped melting and there are 3 or 4 new leaves now.

Pic: some baby leaves and super long roots - should I trim them? This side of the rhizome looks fine, but...

What I'm concerned about are these little brown patches on the rhizome. It has never been buried. The patches are not mushy, but they look really strange. I'm not sure if they will spread - maybe it'd be better to chop the rhizome up and save the non-brown part?

Smaller yellowish patch w/ fibrous white strings - is that a problem?

Looks like a fungal infection. The anubias is probably on its way out. cut off ALL infected parts and then do a thorough dip in 70% alcohol a few times and maybe you'll save the plant.

Woww, quick response. Thanks, although the news is bad =\ For the alcohol dip, do I want to leave it in there for some time or just quickly dip and rinse off?

Dip for 30 seconds. Rinse off. Repeat.

I'm currently in the process of saving my Anubias by growing them out of water until they heal

OK, well, I've chopped off the infected bits, dipped in alcohol, hoping now that the plant does OK.

Interesting! Do you plant it in soil? Shallow water?

every time i would cut into the green and put the plant back into the water it would start to rot again from the cut. So i decided to allow the wound to callus and harden before putting it back into the tank. I'm using damp soil covered in a container to keep in the moister.
