Jumping Koi
I've got some koi fry recently and i have them in a 500 gallon in ground pond, a mud pond to be exact current less and filter less. I have noticed that they have been jumping a lot and recently one had jumped on to land. Could you guys help me fix this.
I have also herd that Koi "jump for joy" in the spring time |

They might be jumping because the pond doesn't have enough O2/current/filter.

I think fish jump out (at least ones that don't typically jump) because the water quality is so bad that they'd rather get out of it than be in it.

lol, never heard of a fish jumping put of water to get out of crappy water... but I guess anything is possible.
In spring/early summer my fish are in their mating season and they will chase each other around the pond, at times one will be chased by 5 or more others and they will occasionally "jump" over plant pots or whatever is in their way, I have never had one jump out of the pond completely, but it would be possible. Also this year I do have two koi in there and have noticed they are much more likely to break the surface of the water, not sure if they are more powerful swimmers or what, maybe its a koi thing... |

You should use a test kit to see how the water conditions are. Also, what's the water temp during the day?

Koi will jump. I've read that they tend to jump if they feel "cramped"? I've had one jump, but I came in and found him in time to save him (he hasn't jumped again in over a year?) I have a couple of pretty large koi in my indoor pond and they jump at night (splash water everywhere) They don't seem to do it during the day. I think it's normal. Maybe a net to prevent loss?

Koi jumping for joy in the spring occurs during mating when the females are basically harrassed and attacked by males to spawn with them. They squeeze her very forcefully to get eggs out and the attacks make her jump. Happens with my goldfish too. They can jump for a lot of reasons. Water quality being one of them. Anothering being temperature or even because they get frightened.
