Black Brush Hair algae. Nasty tufts of algae that grab hold of whatever they are growing on and won't let go. The SAE's rip it right off, munch on it a while and let the rest fall to the bottom to die.

IOW, the dreaded BBA. Sounds like I gotta get me some SAEs.
There have been reports that AFFs (American Flag Fish) also will eat the stuff. I have a pair that were in with a Java fern, and the fern had the outermost 1/3 of two leaves literally engulfed in BBA. Never saw either of the AFF touch it. I cut those leaves out of the tank. James

Yeah, I heard that about the Flag Fish, too, but reports have been inconsistent. I guess if a fish is hungry enough, it might eat anything. Even SAE's will stop feeding on the BBA if they are getting enough flake food.
